ID RATHER LISTEN TO JAMES BROWN THAN JAY-Z! Amazing as it may sound, especially coming from a rapper, its true. As I take yet another delay filled train ride home mentally exhausted from a hard day of doing nothing at work, I decide to throw my ipod on shuffle. The results were shocking, instead of being bombarded by the usual assortment of mixtape music and gangsta raps I was greeted by a pleasant surprise. My ipod decided today was the day that I would remember that long before I loved rappin I loved music. As track after track reintroduced me to old favorites like Babyface, SWV, and Jodeci I was forced to ask myself...what ever happened to this type of music? How could I go from loving R & B and wanting to be a singer to hating the genre? What's the difference between then and now? As the questions continued to flood my brain the Late Great James Brown began blaring through my headphones and the answer was as clear as day. SOUL! That's what the game has been missing and until it returns the music will continue to suffer. I guess you really can sell your soul huh? --dizzy

Soul has been replaced by commercialism. Sad as it may sound, music today has to sound good instead of feel good. I don't want to paint Hip Hop with this broad brush because there are still songs and artists that evoke true feeling when I hear them and I do like a lot of the "Catchy" club and party music, but what last longer in your memory. There are many a party record that have come and gone but Lonely Heart by Boyz II Men from way back in 1991-92 is a song that I will never forget because of the feelings in evoked inside of me every time I heard it.

I'm glad to hear you say that. And DarkWing is right. Soul has been replaced by commercialism. James Brown goes back to the days when singers actually SANG rather than just PERFORM. Now you need to decided, do you want to break the current status quo and be a singer or do you want to follow the current crowd and be a performer.
I know you're not a fan, but there was a skit on Sean Paul's Dutty Rock Album where Sean Paul is pulled over by the police in Jamaica. The officer asked him what he did, he said singer, musician, and some other things along that line and the officer didn't understand. But when Sean Paul said he was an entertainer, the officer understood. And as much i love that album and some of his last one, that's really all he is, an entertainer. And that's all most of these newer artists are these days...entertainers.

entertainment is a luxery... something you dont really need... the music your talking about is something necessary to help us see 2morrow without going insane... nicely written... the game is definitly missing soul, with very few exceptions...
